There will be several tasks required by Monday, June 15, 2009 to begin clerkships - You'll be instructed to visit the "3rd- Year Orientation" site on "Class of 2011" ANGEL site for Agenda and full details.
Class of 2011 Orientation 3rd Year Orientation will include a variety of activities and presentations designed to welcome students to the clinical phase of training and to prepare them for success.
Attendance is mandatory. Additional information sessions are available to watch in ANGEL and are also required.
During orientation, time will be set aside for miscellaneous tasks including; obtaining a pager, mailbox key, and IUSM ID cards (only if you don't already have one, the cards will be prepared in the Campus Center on the IUPUI campus during orientation, however, the wait on June 15 may be long because of IUPUI students. If you're in Indianapolis prior to June 15 and you don't already have an IUSM ID card, we encourage you to have one prepared in advance by going to the Campus Center Suite #217, Monday-Friday, 8:30-4:30.)
Health requirements - In preparation for the beginning of your clinical training, please check your copy of the immunization forms that you provided prior to matriculation to make sure your health records are complete, as some of you may have forgotten to submit follow-up information (such as proof of second and/or third Hepatitis B immunizations). If you do not have your copy, you may contact IUPUI Student Health Services (SHS) at 274-8214 to request a "Release of Information" form to receive your immunization records to check for completeness. Please do not wait until the last possible moment to verify this information.
In addition to updating your immunization records, you must submit to IUPUI Student Health Services documentation of your PPD tuberculin skin test by Monday, June 15. This test is required annually and must be dated within three months prior to the beginning of your third year. Documentation must be on record with SHS in Indianapolis by Monday, June 8. Students who fail to complete this requirement will be removed from rotations.
Documentation of completion of health requirements should be submitted to:

Universal Precautions - Annual training on Universal Precautions for health care workers at risk for bloodborne pathogen exposures is mandated by the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration. Therefore, you will need to review this training once per year.
For your convenience, a website has been designed to facilitate training for IUSM faculty, staff, and students. The website is designed to allow you to review information on Universal Precautions, and also contains information on important bloodborne pathogens, such as HIV, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C. The website also contains information on tuberculosis, which also presents significant risks to health care workers.
Please go to the ANGEL site to complete this required training by Monday, June 15, 2009. At the end of the training module, you will have the opportunity to print a certification of completion. Please print this and keep it for your records.
If you have not already had fit-testing for a TB respirator, Student Health Services (SHS) will make arrangements for you to be tested. SHS will distribute details regarding this requirement later in the spring.
These measures are required for the protection of you and of your patients, therefore, students who fail to document completion of all health requirements and/or have not completed Universal Precautions training will be removed from clerkships.
Parking - Students moving from the IUSM campuses should refer to the IUPUI Parking Services website for campus maps and information about parking on campus.
Housing - The Office of Student Financial Services maintains a housing resources website (click here). In addition, class officers have traditionally put together a housing list. (Please contact your officers for information.)
If you have questions about orientation or universal precautions training, please contact my office (274-7173).
Questions about health requirements should be referred to Student Health Services at 274-1023.
