PDAs are used in Clinical Encounters Tracking (CET) and are required for 3rd- and 4th-year students. Please look carefully at the recommendations and compatibility information provided on these pages. The 2009-2010 PDA recommendation is the HP iPAQ 110 Classic (same as last year). A number of Palm OS or Windows Mobile PDAs and smartphones will also be supported. The device must have a touch screen interface. Therefore, do not purchase Windows Mobile hardware based on "Smartphone edition" since you will not be able to obtain signatures. The CERTTS system also will not function on BlackBerry devices. Windows devices will need to run Windows Mobile 2003 or later, Palm devices must be Palm OS 4 or higher.
The HP iPAQ 110 Classic model is recommended because it fully supports the CERTTS requirements, has ample room for additional medical reference software (see Epocrates Essentials announcement), and does not require a cellular contract since it is not a phone. The device has built-in Wi-Fi, which gives you the ability to sync your CERTTS data wirelessly, check email, browse the web or sync your device over the internet. One disadvantage to this device is that it does not have a built-in thumb keyboard. There are currently no PDA-only devices which have a thumb keyboard. In contrast, most smartphones on the market today have built-in thumb keyboards to make text entry more convenient.
These devices will be supported in 2009-2010.
Palm Zire 22 ($99 or less - no longer available for retail sales). Will support CERTTS and a small number of medical reference programs. This is the minimum hardware required to fulfill your 3rd year tracking requirements. This device does not have Wi-Fi and you will therefore need a Windows computer to upload your logs to ANGEL. A Mac with Boot Camp, VMWare or Parallels will also work.
