Financial Aid Guide
— Scholarships & Loans Through IUSM —
Through the generosity of alumni, friends, corporations and foundations, the IU School of Medicine annually awards scholarships and loans to financially needy and academically deserving medical students. The named scholarships and loan programs listed in this financial aid guide reflect the importance that individuals have placed on making an investment in future physicians - an investment that will yield a valuable resource and quality medical practitioners.
IU School of Medicine Scholarship and Loan Committee
The IU School of Medicine (IUSM) awards in total over 3.8 million dollars in scholarships annually. The majority of these scholarships are used in recruitment of our best and brightest accepted students (largely focused on our in-state residents). Nearly one-third of the overall scholarships are granted or based on financial need and/or academic achievement. A very small amount is attributed to scholarships based strictly on outstanding academic achievement after the first year of medical school. Lastly, an even smaller amount is based strictly on financial need.
Students applying strictly for financial need-based scholarships must first apply for federal aid by submitting the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) with parental information. This is regardless of the student's age or independency status. Parental information is used exclusively in selecting medical students for scholarships based solely or in part on financial need. Academic scholarships are awarded to students who do not already have an IUSM four-year commitment scholarship and who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement in medical school subjects (usually after the first year). Recruitment (Academic) scholarships to incoming first-year medical students are awarded using the information submitted to the IUSM Office of Admissions with focus on retaining our best and brightest students accepted to the medical school.
All first-year medical students who complete the IUSM Application for Financial Assistance (by May 31) and the FAFSA (by March 10) will be considered for all IUSM scholarships listed on the following pages. IUSM's Annual Scholarship selections are made by the Scholarship Committee each year in late June with recruitment scholarships decided prior to the national decision date of May 15. The average annual scholarship is approximately $3,500, with scholarships ranging from as little as $500 to full in-state tuition. While some scholarships have restrictions, the IUSM Scholarship Committee maintains a philosophy of equal opportunity. Medical students receiving the Armed Forces Health Professions Scholarship Programs (HPSP) or the National Health Service Corps Scholarship (NHSC) will be deemed ineligible for IUSM scholarships since the HPSP and NHSC programs provide full funding (tuition, fees, books and living stipends).
The Scholarship Committee members are:

- Elizabeth Elkas, Associate Dean

Renewability and eligibility of scholarship assistance has been outlined by the committee in the following policy statement:
"The receipt of any academic or combined need and academic scholarship by a student is contingent upon:
- timely receipt of the student's required information and application,
- the criteria of the scholarship award as set by the donor, and
- the student maintaining good academic standing."
Good academic standing, as defined by the IUSM Scholarship Committee, is a student who is not on academic probation for any reason during the entire preceding academic year or semester. The IUSM Student Manual defines what constitutes good academic standing in general.
Finally, Renewability will be contingent upon the demonstrated financial need of the student and the availability of funds.

This scholarship was established in December 1998 in memory of Aline Mary Aust Condict and Charles H. Aust Sr., M.D. Aline was deeply religious, kind, supportive family member, and a wonderful sister, aunt, and mother. She was a great source of strength and solace to her brother Charles throughout his life and particularly during his struggle with lymphoma, prior to his death. Dr. Charles Aust, Sr. was born the youngest child in a large farm family near Boonville, IN. When he was 4 years old he experienced a severe illness that nearly took his life. He recovered after visits from the local doctor, who he remembered had a "long white beard." From that time on, it was his goal to become a physician. Dr. Aust did his undergraduate work at Evansville College and Indiana University Bloomington. After receiving his M.D. in 1953, he spent 4 years in general practice in Terre Haute. He then did a residency in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at the IUSM in Indianapolis. Subsequently, he relocated to Fort Wayne, IN, where he was a pathologist at Lutheran Hospital for almost thirty years; and was active in the Fort Wayne Medical Society and served a term as President. He was a long time delegate to the ISMA in Indianapolis, and served on numerous committees. He testified for the medical profession before the Indiana General Assembly. He was dedicated to he community and served on the board of Southwest Allen County Schools and was deputy coroner in Allen County. He was a director of the teaching program for medical technologists at Lutheran Hospital, and was very good at explaining disease processes to his non-pathologist colleagues. he loved a good story, and was often found in the "gas chamber" of the old Lutheran Hospital, telling or listening to some humorous medical anecdote. Dr. Aust Sr. and his colleagues started a "summer internship" for medical students in pathology laboratory and he enjoyed teaching younger physicians in training. He is remembered as a good pathologist and teacher, an effective "medical politician" and a strong supporter of the IUSM and the medical profession. Physicians knew him as a good friend to everyone, especially his colleagues.
